An Organic Way of Life

I believe that beauty starts from within – you know the saying “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” – so with that said I have recently started to take a look within and have asked “what am I doing for the environment, for myself, my family…?”  So for over the past three months I have been trying my best to live an organic lifestyle.  Trust me, living organic is not cheap to say the least, but I do feel that I am contributing to saving the planet and by knowing what I eat and natural products I use should mean something – or does it really?  I recently read an article in a daily New York mag that when we look for organic certifications, we must keep in mind that standards vary and that “green” products are not always beneficial as they seem – WHAT??!! guess I assumed that if the labels reads “green or organic” then its beneficial – guess I was wrong? The article continued to go on that most ingredients labeled organic products are usually not overseen by the FDA.  Oh man, just when I thought I was trying to live a healthy lifestyle, but don’t fret, the first step is to always remember to do thorough research and to ask your doctor regarding your diet.

In my research, I came across a great website www.cosmeticdatabase.com - here you can check those mysterious ingredients that are sometimes hard to pronounce.  Remember, to also look for proof of certifications and seals that guarantee “that products is less than 95 percent natural and fee of harmful synthetic ingredients”.

Another resource for you avid readers is to check out ”Quantum Wellness” by Kathy Fresnot.  This was given to me by a friend who lives a Vegan lifestyle.    The author creates a wonderful book that is focused on transforming our health and the relationship we have with the world.   She writes about ‘8 Pillars’ of wellness: Meditation, Visualization, Fun activities, Conscious eating, Exercise, Self-work, Spiritual practice and Service. Her idea is that by taking a series of small but important steps, we will eventually achieve ‘Quantum Wellness.’   Another fav is – “Skinny Bitch” by Rory Freedman - a witty, funny, sexy approach to holistic nutrition.  Also check out “Green Goes with Everything” by Sloan Barnett, Barnett does her research and presents a good primer to get anyone started on a healthy, toxic-free life.

All in all, what’s your best bet?  Read the ingredients and RESEARCH! RESEARCH! RESEARCH!
